| Chinchillas are originally from the Andes Mountains in South America. Their name means "Little Chinta," which is a South American tribe. Chinchillas have extraordinarily soft fur. In fact, chinchillas have anywhere from 80 to 100 hairs per follicle. People usually only have 1 or 2 hairs per follicle. Also, their hairs are 500 times finer than human hair. This thick fur coat helps keep chinchillas warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. Chinchillas have very unusual bathing habits. In order to keep this fur coat soft, chinchillas need to take daily sand baths in their Chinchilla Bath House. Since chinchillas are originally from mountains, their cage needs to have a lot space and ledges to jump to and from. Multi-level Care Critter Homes with Leap N' Ledges are perfect for this. Chinchillas are surprisingly intelligent. Every now and then, your chinchilla might "chat" with you by making little noises. They can be taught tricks and even learn to recognize their own name. Chinchillas will even remember if someone startled them or frightened them. So, make sure you treat your chinchilla well or it will remember! |
