Hamsters are the lovable small animal pet that is for beginners!
Hamsters make perfect pets for both first time and experienced pet owners. Their simple care needs (and small size) make them perfect for school classrooms and kids of all ages.
Hamsters get their name from the German word "hamstern," which means to hoard (bring food back to their homes to be eaten later). Just like their name suggests, hamsters are known for their ability to store large amounts of food in their cheeks. They are capable of building a food stash the size of 100 bags of sugar! How do they do it? Hamsters have long fur-lined pouches on the sides of their heads that actually go all the way down to their shoulders.
Pet hamsters prefer to be kept as the only pet in their habitat. They naturally explore and dig so it is important to provide them with a large enough living space and bedding. It is also important know that a hamster's teeth never stop growing. You can satisfy their natural instinct to chew and keep them healthy by giving them plenty of chew toys. Since your pet's health and happiness is very important, make sure your hamster gets plenty of exercise. Try watching your hamster run in its Comfort Wheel or explore the house in the safety of a Run-about Ball.
All "Golden Hamsters" (named that because of their natural coloration) are thought to be descendants of just a few pet hamsters in the 1930's in Syria. That means if you and a friend each have a Golden Hamster, then they are probably cousins! The other main type of hamster is the Dwarf Hamster, but other breeds include Fancy Hamsters, Teddy Bear Hamsters, Black Bear Hamsters, and Panda Hamsters.
Hamsters weigh on average between three and five ounces and are about 5 to 7 inches long. They usually live 2 to 3 years and are perfect for owners aged 8 and up. Unlike humans, hamsters are nocturnal animals. This means they are most active during the nighttime and sleep during the daytime hours.
