HOUSES & HIDE-OUTS
If none of the more common pets catch your interest, there are plenty of exciting new pets around. African pygmy hedgehogs have the unique behavior of rolling up into a ball when frightened. When they do this, the specialized hardened hairs on their backs stick up creating a ball of spikes that helps protect these cute and curious creatures from danger. The Australian sugar gliders have loose skin that stretches between their wrists and ankles that gives them "wings" to glide from tree to tree. They have been known to glide as far as 150 ft. and catch flying insects while gliding! These are very affectionate pets that develop very strong bonds with their owner. Sugar gliders are marsupials which means they have a pouch like a kangaroo! Similar in appearance to the sugar glider is the dormouse. Unlike many rodents, dormice have fuzzy tails. Dormice are famous for their incredibly crazy antics at night. Place a red light bulb over your dormice's CritterTrail home, and they can entertain you for hours! There is always the lovable prairie dog. These little creatures have their own language, and in nature, live in little prairie dog towns! As pets, they are very social and can learn their own names. Like prairie dogs, degus also live in elaborate tunnel systems, and call out to other degus if there is danger. When they aren't warning others of danger, they are taking a dust bath in their Chinchilla Bath House, or sharing a piece of corn on the cob with their friends.
